The Horror of the Holocaust has left its indelible mark on Marisol's family, , dolefully complicit in the removal of the Jews of Lyon in the service of the infamous Butcher of Lyon, Klaus Barbie. Now her family is rising again supporting Neo -Fascist militias in Franceand Spain with money and propaganda and caches of weapons. It has fallen to her, Marisol Pilar de Froissart, heiress, socialite and humanitarian to stop them.
Steven Dunning, a musician from San Francisco, is on a quest of his own, this second-tier tenor and a failure in his own eyes at least. And then Steven outrageously becomes Marisol's consort the through a quaint accident in a bistrot in the First Arrondissement. And a poetic and musical encounter in the Luxembourg. They have adventures across France, Spain and in his native California, and experience love in many forms.

The book cover reflects the fire of love, in Paris of course, with the young woman looking straight out at the reader. Her grandfather's horrendous past, Collaborator, murderer, Fascist... always with her! Now her family is rising again on a path to sedition and insurrection. She, Marisol Pilar de Froissart, is indomitable, she is stunningly beautiful, and she is in control. And Paris takes her to new heights.
She is from Lyon, in Paris on business. Steven Dunning, our almost willing hero, is from San Francisco trying to line up concert tours for his chorus... and failing. All is put aside when they are seated across from one another in a Bistrot in the First Arrondissement and choose to spend the afternoon in the Luxembourg Gardens. And choose to be lovers.
Also Music controls the pacing. A certain piece, a Song Cycle by Hector Berlioz, repeats throughout the novel... it is a life, called 'Les Nuits d'ETE' set to poetry of Theophile Gauthier... and their life together follows the theme of the cycle. From the Gaiety of the Springtime in which they met through... well, no spoilers.

Ross depicts Steven, a man of mediocre musical talent who, after years of “playing the field,” meets the one woman who completes him.Marisol is a complicated, sophisticated, French heiress involved in wonderful charity work. They meet in France by sheer chance and almost immediately their beautiful romance begins.
They quickly become a couple. and Ross’s story creates a travelogue of beautiful, and often exotic places. During their myriad vacations, they enjoy incredible epicurean delights. Rose pays tremendous detail to both the history of the regions, focusing often on places of religious and/or historical fame, and their very upscale dining experiences. Very full of Michelin Stars!
